Gear is bought on the laptop (Shop). Each item has 3 upgrades. Prices grow 6× per level, and the effect grows with it. Some upgrades only unlock at a fame level.^[1]

Cheap first levels across many items often beat one expensive top level.
Getting heard gear does not make songs better, but it makes good songs earn more.
Some upgrades are locked behind fame. Plan for them before you have the money.
